Basic authentication is a simple authentication scheme built into the HTTP protocol used to connect to servers or services.
Simply put, it is a mechanism to verify whether the username and password is correct or not to connect to said server/service.
Servers of services you may use could be mail exchange servers (SMTP) or hardware (e.g. printer).
We're aware of Microsoft deprecating basic authentication on some of their products to improve security and have done our own investigations on how this could of affected our customers.
Whilst investigating, we found the following (in the URL below), "There are no plans to disable Basic Authentication for SMTP AUTH clients at this time..." which means that schools can continue as per normal for now.

EHG contacted Microsoft directly as well to confirm that this is true as well.
Given the above, we will endeavor to keep watch and plan for this when we the time comes.
