Symantec has issued SSL/TLS (HTTPS) certificates that contain issues which will result in several popular browsers flagging any site using them as 'untrusted'. This will be prevalent at sites using a certificate that has Symantec as the root Certificate Authority (CA).
This could also potentially affect certificates issued by Symantec’s subsidiary Certificate Authorities ‒ Thawte, GeoTrust and RapidSSL.
Does This Affect My Site?
If you are using an SSL/TLS certificate from Symantec at your site (for Community Portal or your school's website/payment gateway), your website may start to display SSL certificate errors advising that the site is not trusted and the certificate is not from a trusted source.
While this will not actually prevent anyone from accessing your site or using your payment gateway, it may deter people from entering your site or using it to process any payments, calling into question the safety of your site.
What You Can Do:
You can check the status of your SSL/TLS certificates by running an SSL report via SSL Labs – Test your server.
We strongly recommend you replace any affected certificates immediately to avoid this error.
Symantec and its subsidiary Certificate Authorities have since been taken over by DigiCert.
