Using shrink to reduce database size and recover disk space

Whilst it is safe to shrink the database to recover space, it's generally not advisable. Shrinking fragments indexes which reduces performance and rebuilding the indexes will consume space anyway. Here's a great article by Brent Ozar describing the problems that shrinking can cause.
